The East Javanese Unique Accent East Javanese people have so many cultures that really distinctive in Indonesia. One of the cultures is the language. There are different languages in every part of East Java with a unique accent and meaning, too. There are three parts of East Java that have different accents. For instance, west area, central area, and east area which those will be interesting to know. The first part is called west area or “Mataraman” zone. “Mataraman” area includes residency of Madiun, Kediri, and the other suburbs around them, they have similar accent to produce word. Concerning the phenomenon of East Java unique accent that the more to west the more polite the dialect. It is caused by the influence of “Keraton” area in the nearest province, Central Java. They use dialect which is similar with Central Java accent. The citizens mostly use polite phrase in making conversation. Most of the societies also apply the distinct word in their daily chat. For instance is the term “Tho” that they usually use in the end of sentences. The other example is the word “Peh” which is used in the beginning of phrase. The next part named central area which consists of Jombang, Malang, Surabaya, and the other cities circumjacent them. They also resemble in their accent which is known as “Jawa Timuran” dialect. The specific characteristics are egalitarian, talk turkey, and they often ignore the polite words that make a rude impression. However, it is creating an intimate fraternity around them. In addition, most of Surabaya society usually use the term “Cok” to call their close friend. It is really different with the previous area, because they think that this word has bad meaning and rude word. Meanwhile, for someone who lives in this area it is common to mention that word in their daily conversation. The other one is the citizens of Malang which is using the word in reserve order or named “Osob Kiwalan”. For instance, they mention “Malang” as “Ngalam”, “Arek” as “Kera”, and etc. The last part is East area that resides in different island called Madura. Madura which consists of four cities, such as Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep has distinctive accent and vocabulary but similar understanding. For examples they mention word “you” with various term such as “kakeh” = “sedeh” = “ba'na” = “ba' ang” = “dhika” = “sampeyan” = “panjhenengan”, and many others. Madura has specific characteristic words which sound of an explosion when they say something. For instance, “tera’” it means bright, “lagghu’” or tomorrow, and etc. Another specific characteristic is a word which includes two consonants such as “pagghun” or permanent, “ketthang” or monkey, and so on. In addition, they use three levels of language to produce every sentence. The first level is “Enja’-Iyah” or rude terms that they use for daily conversation with the same age or someone who is younger than them. The second is “Enggi-Enten” or the intermediate terms which is used for making a chat with someone who is older than them but has a similar social acceptability, but usually they are used for making conversation with someone who is unknown well. The third is “Enggi-Bunten” or polite word that they use for making conversation with someone who reputably. In the other word, the citizens of Madura have to obey those roles, they will be judged as uneducated ones if they step out of line. In fact, East Javanese have so many various accents that we will ever hear. For this reason, in my opinion as an East Javanese we have to confess that we have many kinds of unique accents and we must save it. Keep them alive and do not let them go. Finally, I think we also have to know more that not only East Java but also the others province in Indonesia have a unique dialect in their daily live.
